With origins in Melbourne, Australia, Movember refers to the global campaign to raise awareness for men’s health issues, specifically testicular and prostate cancer. The initiative invites men to grow mustaches throughout the month of November, raising funds through the support of sponsors. Since its inception, more than 1.9 million people have participated in official campaigns around the world. In 2011 alone, over 854,000 so-called Mo Bros and Mo Sisters took part, raising $126.3 million.

In addition to raising awareness and educating the public about men’s health, the money raised funds cancer research and survivor initiatives to support men affected by male cancers. Funds raised in the United States are directed to men’s health partners that include the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the LIVESTRONG Foundation.
